MOTOR GENERATOR CORPORATION/HOBART SELF PROPELLED GROUND POWER UNIT

$1,200.00

Description

We acquired this Hobart GPU in approximately 2015 from an FBO shutting down. Originally a self propelled ground power unit acquired by braniff airlines, the FBO was using this as a tug. With some work we had the engine running easily. Winter came shortly after and we never drove it. In 2017 we acquired a historically significant clarkator tug which we got running using the new accessories we previously installed on this tug (please see below). We sealed the engine up and haven’t worked on it since.
The unit is powered by a Chrysler flathead IND-8A. The 8A was a 251 cu engine which had variants installed in new Mopars all the way through 1968. Parts for the engine are easy to find as they were used in many different tractors, forklifts, pumps, and other industrial settings.
*This engine will at a minimum need: spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor (replace or rebuild), carburetor (replace or rebuild) battery, and an alternator/generator. There may be other engine work and parts required to complete functionality. This is a list of items I personally know & can visibly see will need replaced/repaired/installed without a doubt.*
Installed between the engine and transmission is the generator. If you are electrically inclined, you may be able to repair it and use for its intended function. This model can deliver 600 Amps @ 28.5volts. The FBO was in the process of removing it from the system when we acquired it.
The transmission and rear end are not seized. We have towed this in neutral multiple times, most recently two months ago. It rolls & steers freely. *It is unknown if transmission requires work for driveability*
Fuel tank appears to have been worked on before we acquired it. There is a spare wheel hub and fire extinguisher holder included. The red marker lights are actual glass. The braniff airlines property ID tag is on the dash right in front of the steering wheel.
This would be a great addition to any mid-century airport display, GSE of this styling does not come available often! We’re asking $1,200 for this. Shipping available, responsibility of the buyer. Plus all applicable taxes.
